Types of Contact Lens Solutions

Have you stood in front of the contact lens solution shelf at the store and wondered if you’re buying the right thing? Different types of solutions and cleaners are used for specific types of contacts, and it also depends on your eyes. Always follow your doctor’s recommendations for which solutions to use since they know your eyes and what will work best with the contact lenses prescribed.

Multipurpose Solution

Multipurpose Solution

Multipurpose solutions are an all-in-one solution, making it the most popular and convenient choice. They can be used to clean, rinse, disinfect, and store your lenses.

Hydrogen Peroxide-Based Systems

Hydrogen Peroxide-Based Systems

Hydrogen peroxide-based cleaning and disinfecting solutions can also be used to clean, disinfect, and store your lenses. They provide a deeper clean and are designed for people with sensitive eyes. However, these solutions come with a red cap, meaning they should never be put directly in or around the eyes. They require a special container (that will be included in the kit) to neutralize the solution over a period of six hours.

Daily Cleaner & Conditioning Solution System

Daily Cleaner & Conditioning

Daily cleaner and conditioning solution systems are specifically for rigid gas permeable (RGP) or hard contacts—they are not to be used with soft contact lenses. The daily cleaner step loosens and removes debris from your contacts and readies the lenses for disinfection. This cleaner also comes with a red cap so it shouldn’t be put directly in or around the eyes. The conditioning solution then disinfects and conditions the contacts so that they can be worn or stored overnight.

Saline Solution

Saline Solution

Saline solutions are meant to rinse your lenses before inserting them into your eye. They are not to be used for cleaning, disinfecting, or storing your lenses.
